10th Annual "Mike Chamberlin and the Living Legends of Broadcasting Holiday Concert" - 2023
This year is our 10th annual "Mike Chamberlin and the Living Legends of Broadcasting Holiday Concert"! Mark your calendar to join us at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 8, 2023 at the Central Methodist Church,1875 North Central Avenue - on Central just north of the Phoenix Art Museum, on the east side of the road. HOBI Scholarship Awarded
Congratulation to Iris Diaz, a student at the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University. Ms. Diaz is the latest recipient of a scholarship funded by the House of Broadcasting. The HOBI scholarship is available to students at both Arizona State University and the University of Arizona. HOBI student scholarships are funded through the proceeds from our "Mike Chamberlin and the Living Legends of Broadcasting Holiday Concert" held each year in December.
PAT McMAHON HONORED
On Friday, March 18 , 2023, HOBI Board Member Irish Pat McMahon was honored by the Jewish Heritage Cultural Center located behind the Burton Barr Library - downtown Phoenix. Lots of work done to put together video of his life including his armed services in Europe. This story went virtual on their website. Another worthy honor for Pat McMahon.
Celebrating Legend City
HOBI Board member Pat McMahon and Phoenix artist, Lou Crandall, Jr. celebrated Legend City’s 60th Anniversary at the Sunnyslope Museum on Saturday, September 16th, 2023.

Dr. John Craft Scholarship
Upon his retirement after 49 years of service at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Professor John E. Craft Scholarship for Electronic Media was announced. This scholarship will provide direct support to students who are interested in careers such as telling long form stories through a visual medium. With the ever-growing need for scholarship support across higher education, your gift to the Craft Scholarship will truly make an impact.

GOVERNOR’S AWARD TO DR. JOHN CRAFT
CONGRATULATIONS to House of Broadcasting board member Dr. John Craft. He is the 2022 recipient of the Prestigious Governor’s Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. John recently retired from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. As a recipient of the Governor's Award, Dr. Craft is also awarded a well-deserved Emmy from the Academy.

House of Broadcasting thanks former KTVK Channel 3 investigative reporter, Mike Watkiss, for his donation of a SONY Beta video cassette player. This is the type of deck used in broadcast news departments all over the country. This deck was retired with the introduction of digital electronics in newsgathering. It's in excellent shape and still works! Thank you, Mike!
Congratulations Alex Solomon!
Arizona State University Junior, Alex Solomon, is 2022's recipient of the House of Broadcasting Inc. endowed scholarship. Alex will graduate next year and plans to pursue a career in the sports industry with her Communications degree from the ASU Hugh Downs School of Human Communication. The endowment was awarded at this year's ceremony held at ASU's University Club on April 15, 2022. This is the 22nd consecutive year that House of Broadcasting has funded this endowment. Attending the awards ceremony were HOBI Board members, Dr. John Craft, Lynda Gallagher, and Thomas Mihalchick. Below are photos from the event.
House of Broadcasting Comes to Arizona Historical Society
House of Broadcasting donated artifacts are featured in the ON AIR: BROADCAST NEWS IN ARIZONA exhibit at the Arizona Historical Society's (AZHS) Heritage Center, 1300 N College Avenue, Tempe, AZ. The exhibit features equipment, photos, and other artifacts that highlight the contribution Arizona broadcasters have made to broadcast news. The 1600 square foot exhibit is scheduled to be open to the public through November 2023.
AL McCOY HONORED
BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME, THE LEGEND – AL McCOY - Many congratulations to legendary broadcaster Al McCoy who has been the “Voice of the Phoenix Suns” for 50 years. Not only is he a Hall of Fame broadcaster … the Suns inducted him into the “Ring of Honor” in 2017. A special unsolicited surprise from Devin Booker – a personally autographed jersey with a special message. House of Broadcasting salutes Al McCoy.
KTAR RADIO
Congratulations to Historic KTAR RADIO for reaching their 100th Year in Broadcasting. At one time KTAR was an AM Station. In 2006 Scott Sutherland, Vice President and Marketing Manager, switched KTAR-AM to 92.3 FM … a very successful move.
Life Before HOBI
A recent project called "Life Outside of HOBI" is underway. The project involves HOBI Board members telling the stories of their lives before they joined HOBI. So far, Lynda Gallagher, Maurie Helle, Pat McMahon, Thomas Mihalchick, and Polly Schumacher have shared their stories in videos. See the videos on the "Life Before HOBI" page or on our YouTube page.

On Tuesday, February 21, 2023 HOBI Board of Directors members attended the ASU Walter Cronkite luncheon to award CBS Morning Show co-host Gayle King the Walter Cronkite Excellence in Journalism Award. She is the 39th recipient of the award.

This year's "Living Legends of Broadcasting Holiday Concert" was held on Friday, December 9, 2022 – 7PM., at the Central Methodist United Church, 1875 North Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85004. This was the House of Broadcasting's 9th Annual Holiday Concert. Special guests included: Mike Chamberlin, Alice Tatum, Jan D’Atri, Pat McMahon, Laurie Fagen,,Buddy Owens, David Miller, Dave Munsey, and Mary Jo West. September 2022
The Board met on Thursday, September 29th at Mary Morrison's home. The agenda included a discussion of our traveling display at the Sunnyslope museum. The museum's director is happy with the display. The Board also discussed getting a display in the Chandler, AZ museum. Board members Susan Baker and Thomas MIhalchick will be working on that task. The Board was presented with an update on the upcoming Holiday Concert, scheduled for December 9th. At this time, the list of performers and the list of prizes for the raffle and silent auction are still being finalized. It was decided to name the concert "Living Legends Holiday Concert". Tickets will be available for sale beginning October 29, 2022.
The next meeting is scheduled for October 27, 12:00 p.m. at the Morrison residence. Board members in attendance included: Mary Morrison, Pat McMahon, Geri Rosato, Maurie Helle, Lynda Gallagher, Thomas Mihalchick, Sofia Wong, and Dr. John Craft. No photo is available.

Sunnyslope Historical Society and Museum Display
House of Broadcasting displayed radio and TV artifacts from the early days of broadcasting at the Sunnyslope Historical Society and Museum, 737 East Hatcher Road, Phoenix. The display ran from from September 2022 through May 2023.

We had a packed agenda that included: congratulations to Dr. John Craft on receiving the Governor's Award, our display at the Arizona Historical Society that was mentioned in an article in the July/August 2022 issue of PHOENIX MAGAZINE, the upcoming Holiday Concert, an upcoming display at the Sunnyslope Museum, our ASU Walter Cronkite HOBI award winner, a donation of equipment from Mike Watkiss (former TV3 reporter), and a recap of the year's activities so far. On May 3, 2018 Board Members – John Craft (Lelis), Lynda Gallagher, Maurie Helle, Lisa Honebrink, Mary Morrison, Judy Schriener, Polly Schumacher, and Sophia Wong attended the Induction of Mary Jo West, former news anchor to the Women’s Hall of Fame. This event took place at the Arizona Historical Museum.

On Saturday, April 28, 2018 HOBI was the proud recipient of $400 from the “Survivors” … a group of persons dedicated to the field of media … establishing their careers with a minimum of 15 years in the advertising area.

The Jerry Foster “Meet and Greet” evening of October 16th was a tremendous success. Standing room only. Jerry opened with remarks and then took questions and answers from the audience. 22 “EARTHBOUND MISFIT” books were sold. Michael Dixon was a wonderful M.C.

MEET AND GREET, OCTOBER 10, 2013: REMEMBERING BILL AUSTIN WITH BETH MCDONALD AND FRIENDS
The House of Broadcasting Radio and Television Museum presented HOBI’s Meet and Greet 2nd series “REMEMBERING BILL AUSTIN” with Beth McDonald and Friends and featuring Marty Manning of KESZ-FM. Bill Austin was one of the funniest and most likable people to have graced our airwaves. It’s been three years since he left us.A lively crowd of friends and fans attended the event. Beth McDonald told many of Bill antics … specifying that he admired the late Johnny Carson. A friend, since 12 years old in Roswell, N.M., flew in from Napa Valley to say a few words about his childhood friend Bill. A big hit of the evening was Austin, a Belgian Malinois handled by three policemen … Austin (the dog) was bought out of funds Bill Austin’s estate provided.

THE HOUSE OF BROADCASTING MUSEUM WAS THE SET LOCATION FOR A RECENT NEWS INTERVIEW OF TV VETERAN HUGH DOWNS WITH KPHO CHANNEL 5 ANCHOR KENT DANA.
The interview aired on the KPHO Channel 5 newscast at 10:00 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2007.

HOBI SALUTES KSLX'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY - MAY 2006
On Thursday, May 18, 2006, the House of Broadcasting Museum saluted KSLX Radio as the station celebrated its 20th anniversary on the air. A special exhibit of station paraphernalia from t-shirts and banners to bumper stickers and posters were on display at the museum at 7150 E. Fifth Avenue (2nd Floor, Santa Fe West). KSLX afternoon talent Steve Trella, morning talent, Mark Mayfield and Valley Focus host/producer Jan Jacobson was on hand along with past station show hosts including Bob Boze Bell and John Giese, to share a piece of anniversary cake. Mike Flatt signed and gave away KSLX 20th anniversary posters. The event was well attended.
RADIO BROADCAST FROM THE MUSEUM
Chuck Schaden, host of "Those Were The Days" program from Chicago, broadcasted live from the House of Broadcasting from February 4 through April 29, 2006. The program was heard in the Chicago area but originated in Scottsdale at 7150 East 5th Avenue. The Saturday broadcasts were attended both by visitors and tourists, many from the Chicago area who had listened to Mr. Schaden and looked forward to meeting him in person.

A NIGHT OF WINE & WALLACE FOR HOBI
hursday, May 12, 2005 was Bon Appetit Art Walk Night in Scottsdale, and HOBI was a participant replete with a water and wine station. What's more, the museum hosted a book signing for Bill Thompson, AKA Wallace of Wallace and Ladmo. The book, "Thanks for Tuning In," is Thompson's biography and was written by Richard Ruellas, author and writer for the Arizona Republic. A special treat and attraction that night was Steve Hoza's exhibit of Wallace & Ladmo memorabilia including photos, t-shirts, show costuming and more. The museum's gallery rooms were filled with visitors throughout the evening.

HOBI HONORS HG LISTIAK
HOBI held a tribute April 28, 2005 for Phoenix legendary broadcaster HG Listiak. It was the one year anniversary of his death. KMLE Country's Stu Evans, a long-time radio partner and friend of HG, served as MC of the event and shared stories about his friend. Tim and Willy from KNIX sang several songs they wrote for HG, and Gary Edens, former owner of KOY, related experiences he had with HG. HG's fiancée Diane presented the museum with his former typewriter, the one on which he penned numerous commentaries. She also contributed several photographs of HG, all of which are now on display at the House of Broadcasting. Approximately 80 people attended, including HG's family, mother and three brothers. HOBI had a booth at the Arizona Broadcasters Association Convention in November 2004 at Phoenix Civic Center. Board member Dave Weiser met and greeted attendees and provided information about the museum.

There will be no meeting in either November or December, 2023 due to the need to prepare for the Holiday Concert on December 8th. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 11, 2024 at noon at the Morrison residence.agenda items discussed included:I. Holiday ConcertMaurie Helle reported on the status of scheduled performers. Maurie does want to be on Ch. 7 with replay. Susan has set-up friend harpist – Dr. Joyce Bueckers (who is also a pastor with Beatitudes). She will play as audience comes in. Lynda has come-up with plan to have separate free raffle of a Ladmo bag as long as you have paid for a ticket. Other Board members reported on additional prizes for the raffle and auction that have been collected. Polly distributed four concert tickets to each Board member. Let Polly know if you need more tickets. 2. Retirement HomesSusan will secure an updated list and will e-mail our Tenth Anniversary line-up.3. Chandler MuseumSusan plans to set-up another meeting with Thomas and John with the Museum. I’m anxious for date and even GAP time. Slow wins! Didn’t they commit for 2025? Before we know it, it will be here.

HOBI SALUTES KSLX'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY - MAY 2006
On Thursday, May 18, 2006, the House of Broadcasting Museum saluted KSLX Radio as the station celebrated its 20th anniversary on the air. A special exhibit of station paraphernalia from t-shirts and banners to bumper stickers and posters were on display at the museum at 7150 E. Fifth Avenue (2nd Floor, Santa Fe West). KSLX afternoon talent Steve Trella, morning talent, Mark Mayfield and Valley Focus host/producer Jan Jacobson was on hand along with past station show hosts including Bob Boze Bell and John Giese, to share a piece of anniversary cake. Mike Flatt signed and gave away KSLX 20th anniversary posters. The event was well attended.
RADIO BROADCAST FROM THE MUSEUM
Chuck Schaden, host of "Those Were The Days" program from Chicago, broadcasted live from the House of Broadcasting from February 4 through April 29, 2006. The program was heard in the Chicago area but originated in Scottsdale at 7150 East 5th Avenue. The Saturday broadcasts were attended both by visitors and tourists, many from the Chicago area who had listened to Mr. Schaden and looked forward to meeting him in person.

A NIGHT OF WINE & WALLACE FOR HOBI
hursday, May 12, 2005 was Bon Appetit Art Walk Night in Scottsdale, and HOBI was a participant replete with a water and wine station. What's more, the museum hosted a book signing for Bill Thompson, AKA Wallace of Wallace and Ladmo. The book, "Thanks for Tuning In," is Thompson's biography and was written by Richard Ruellas, author and writer for the Arizona Republic. A special treat and attraction that night was Steve Hoza's exhibit of Wallace & Ladmo memorabilia including photos, t-shirts, show costuming and more. The museum's gallery rooms were filled with visitors throughout the evening.

HOBI HONORS HG LISTIAK
HOBI held a tribute April 28, 2005 for Phoenix legendary broadcaster HG Listiak. It was the one year anniversary of his death. KMLE Country's Stu Evans, a long-time radio partner and friend of HG, served as MC of the event and shared stories about his friend. Tim and Willy from KNIX sang several songs they wrote for HG, and Gary Edens, former owner of KOY, related experiences he had with HG. HG's fiancée Diane presented the museum with his former typewriter, the one on which he penned numerous commentaries. She also contributed several photographs of HG, all of which are now on display at the House of Broadcasting. Approximately 80 people attended, including HG's family, mother and three brothers. HOBI had a booth at the Arizona Broadcasters Association Convention in November 2004 at Phoenix Civic Center. Board member Dave Weiser met and greeted attendees and provided information about the museum.

December 2022The Board met on Wednesday, December 14 at the Morrison residence. The meeting included a recap of the Holiday Concert. The Board discussed comments from attendees and made recommendations for the 2023 Holiday Concert. Plans were begun for this year's show

On May 3, 2018 Board Members – John Craft (Lelis), Lynda Gallagher, Maurie Helle, Lisa Honebrink, Mary Morrison, Judy Schriener, Polly Schumacher, and Sophia Wong attended the Induction of Mary Jo West, former news anchor to the Women’s Hall of Fame. This event took place at the Arizona Historical Museum.
"SURVIVORS" DONATION
On Saturday, April 28, 2018 HOBI was the proud recipient of $400 from the “Survivors” … a group of persons dedicated to the field of media … establishing their careers with a minimum of 15 years in the advertising area.

The Jerry Foster “Meet and Greet” evening of October 16th was a tremendous success. Standing room only. Jerry opened with remarks and then took questions and answers from the audience. 22 “EARTHBOUND MISFIT” books were sold. Michael Dixon was a wonderful M.C.

MEET AND GREET, OCTOBER 10, 2013: REMEMBERING BILL AUSTIN WITH BETH MCDONALD AND FRIENDS
The House of Broadcasting Radio and Television Museum presented HOBI’s Meet and Greet 2nd series “REMEMBERING BILL AUSTIN” with Beth McDonald and Friends and featuring Marty Manning of KESZ-FM. Bill Austin was one of the funniest and most likable people to have graced our airwaves. It’s been three years since he left us.A lively crowd of friends and fans attended the event. Beth McDonald told many of Bill antics … specifying that he admired the late Johnny Carson. A friend, since 12 years old in Roswell, N.M., flew in from Napa Valley to say a few words about his childhood friend Bill. A big hit of the evening was Austin, a Belgian Malinois handled by three policemen … Austin (the dog) was bought out of funds Bill Austin’s estate provided.
