CELEBRATING 28 YEARS IN OPERATION!THE HOUSE OF BROADCASTING (HOBI) is proud to be celebrating its 28 years of operation. It began in 1997, with financial support from the Phoenix Chapter of American Women in Radio and Television and the Arizona Broadcasters Association. It has prospered and grown, thanks to the support of television and radio stations, personal and industry contributions. It is Arizona’s largest private collection of broadcast memorabilia. The House of Broadcasting, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public and preserving and celebrating the history, personalities and paraphernalia of radio and television in Arizona. It is one of only five museums in the country dedicated to the broadcast industry. The four others are in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Washington D. C.
The museum has come a long way since its inception. HOBI’s beginnings were modest, a limited exhibition display in the South Arcade at Phoenix Chris-Town (now Chris-Town- Spectrum Mall). It started with just one window display and grew to several.
Several hundred visitors toured HOBI per month, from across the state, the nation and the globe. They enjoyed the treasures that fill the Museum’s gallery rooms. Visitors delighted in the one of a kind photographs and awards, cameras, editing and lighting equipment. Special favorites were costuming and classical memorabilia from Buck Owens, (HOBI is the only Museum with Buck Owens costume outside his Bakersfield Museum), early news attire from Mary Jo West, the Marty Robbins, Lew King, Karl Eller, Tom Chauncey, and the Ira Lavin collections.
The Museum also participated in the Smithsonian gallery in 1998, at the Tempe Festival, the Arizona Broadcasters Association exhibitor’s event, and did host community events including book signings for such notable authors as Hugh Downs, and Bill Thompson aka Wallace of Wallace and Ladmo, Maurie Helle (producer) Jana Bommersbach, Jan D’Atri, host on KPNX-TV … Al McCoy, Voice of the Phoenix Suns.
We also held an evening discussion on Hurricane Katrina with Jonathan Elias, Ch. 15 (Emmy Award winning anchor); Peter Busch, Ch. 5 with questions from the 100 plus audience attending. These two newscasters reported live from New Orleans. These high profile celebrity events garnered significant print and broadcast coverage. The museum has been featured on Fox 10, News 3, ABC 15, Channel 12 and CBS 5, as well as on Scottsdale Cable shows and in Trends Magazine, Scottsdale Magazine, Phoenix Magazine, Phoenix Home & Garden, Arizona Republic, Key Magazine and the Tribune.
In fact, HOBI had a 15-minute exclusive featured show touring the Museum in 2011 produced and playing on Scottsdale Cable 11.
